Rising, the

Approximately 300 years before the Heroes of Death first met in the Drowning Swan Tavern, the oceans of the world grew vastly in size. It is estimated that the sea level today is almost 100 feet higher than it was before the Rising. This event occurred only months after Raymond Raylor set off on his second voyage to Eethrum.

Although the cause is unknown, many religious fanatics in Desstrum believe that magic users caused the Rising. The wayward followers of Pelor calling themselves the Falling Sun have been known to abduct, torture, and murder those who they suspect of using arcane powers.

The political effect of the Rising was as enormous. The entire continent of Desstrum was consumed with total war for over a century. Relative peace only came after the elf nation’s armada grew in size to outnumber the fleets of the halflings, dwarves, and humans combined. The tiefling nation lost the most in the wars, going from controlling the vast majority of the northern half of the continent, to only the Orean desert, from which they now raid the adjacent dragonborn and human lands. The eladrin and dragonborn were the least affected, due to the inland position of their capitals and farmlands.
